First Aid & CPR Nunavut

In health care, maintaining high standards of care is essential to protect the public. For regulated nurses, keeping resuscitation and first-aid skills current is part of an annual competence cycle and is often an employer requirement; for personal support workers it is built into the qualification for the role. Here is what the rules expect for your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

Nurses in Nunavut are regulated jointly with the Northwest Territories by the College and Association of Nurses of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut (CANNN, formerly RNANT/NU). All practising registrants attest annually to a Continuing Competency Plan (CCP) built around two learning goals and their related activities, with roughly 10% of members audited each year. Physicians are regulated through the Nunavut territorial registrar.

Nursing standards require registrants to maintain the competencies their practice demands and to be able to act in an emergency. Clinically relevant training such as BLS or CPR can be included among the plan's learning activities, and in hospital, long-term-care and community settings a current BLS or CPR certificate is generally an employer requirement rather than a licensing condition.

Continuing competence is mandatory but not measured in fixed hours: the annual CCP requires two learning goals and related activities rather than a set number of credits, with 10% of members audited each year.

For support staff, health programs at Nunavut Arctic College require a Standard First Aid/CPR-C certificate (alongside WHMIS and Food Safe), and first-aid certification may be required of personal support workers in elder-care and home-support roles. A recognized standalone first-aid/CPR certificate is a required component of the qualification for the role, kept current and renewed on schedule.
